Food is Fuel
Updated: Apr 21, 2020
So I’m obsessed with superfoods and always trying to find ways to sneak them into my diet. I love learning about new superfoods and how each can improve your health from the inside out. I’m a huge believer when it comes to listening to your body, so when it comes to my diet, I don’t specifically fit into one “category” or diet type. I eat to fuel my body and am constantly learning what foods make me feel good. I have the biggest sweet tooth ever and sometimes you can’t help but reach for the chocolate even when you know you’re body’s just thirsty. Life is all about balance, right?? Although 80% of the time, I try my best to listen to what my body is truly craving- I’m not perfect and don’t ever think I’ll get it right, which I can totally live with.
I’ve supported and have loosely followed the paleo diet for about five years now. There were chunks of time where I never followed it at all, but I firmly believe in nourishing the body with whole, natural foods like fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, lean proteins, micronutrients, superfoods and plenty of water! I became a vegetarian for two years- it started off accidentally- and I just decided to ride the wave. This lead me to experience more of a plant-based lifestyle, which I love just as much as a paleo-based diet. Nowadays, I try to continue to fuel my body with foods that make me feel good. Sometimes those include gluten-free grains or legumes, which are not paleo or sometimes I’ll eat lean meats, which wouldn’t be considered plant-based. You just gotta give your body what it wants!
Some people find it easier or more suitable for their bodies to remain strictly paleo or vegan, vegetarian, raw, pescetarian, plant-based, whatever it may be. There are some people who bop around between. I believe in each person fueling their body how they see fit and no one has to fit into a diet or category or explain why they eat a certain way. To each their own! I always get people who may ask me, “well aren’t you paleo, why are you eating legumes?” or “well aren’t you vegetarian, you can’t eat that chicken.” To some degree, yes. Some days or weeks I may find myself aligning more to paleo, and sometimes my body is just craving all the vegetables and legumes. It is what it is and at the end of the day if I feel good about what I put into my body, I’m happy.
I don’t believe in judging others for what they eat or how they eat. Every body is completely different and has different needs. I don’t believe in “good” foods or “bad” foods. Food is fuel and however someone wants to nourish their body is up to them- because it’s their body not mine! It sucks feeling ashamed or embarrassed for the way you eat, and I would never want to make anyone feel that way. Every body works differently, and what may work for me, may not work for my family or friends. Of course I love sharing my insights about the benefits of superfoods, but would never tell someone they have to eat the exact same way I do.
Like I said, life is all about balance. I don’t know about you but sometimes I feel like it’s something I constantly strive for. But sometimes balance is maybe eating more of your dessert than you had wanted or not drinking enough water because you drank coffee all morning. It all works out in the end. Each day presents a new opportunity to be a better version of ourselves.
